Before preparing to receive Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, children must first come to know and love Him at an age appropriate level. Therefore, children preparing for First Holy Communion are to complete one full year of Faith Formation (FF, Catholic School or Home-school) just prior to entering Sacramental Preparation.
When can my child begin preparing for First Holy Communion?
Baptized children who have completed one year of faith formation can begin preparation for First Holy Communion as young as 7 years old.
Typically, a child begins formal religious education in the first grade, therefore allowing him/her to begin sacramental preparation in the second grade.
All the faithful are obliged to approach the Holy Eucharist only if they are reconciled with God and Church. Therefore, it is customary that a child preparing for Holy Communion also prepare and celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation/Penance at the same time.
Children who attended catholic school or were homeschooled the previous year must provide "proof of classes," at the time of registration, for the previous year and proof of enrollment for the current year from that school/church. As soon as you register, please email, fax or mail proof to the Director of Faith Formation as soon as possible.
Baptized children in the 2nd grade who have completed one year of Faith Formation classes (or Catholic School/Homeschool) will prepare for the sacrament of Holy Communion in combination with their weekly faith formation curriculum.
In addition to weekly classes, there will be several mandatory informational and catechetical meetings.
Attend Mass Weekly! – The best way to prepare your child to celebrate their first Holy Communion is to take them to Mass each week. Help your child practice by inviting them to join the communion line with you. NOTE: Their arms should be crossed over their chest so as to receive a blessing rather than the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
